Mae
Nutt, Activist
Fueled by the grief of losing two sons to cancer, Mae Nutt has
become an unlikely advocate for the movement to legalize medical
marijuana. Her older son Keith first smoked it to alleviate the
extreme nausea caused by chemotherapy treatments for testicular
cancer, and she soon became convinced of its efficacy in making life
bearable again for seriously ill patients. Now, almost thirty years
later, Mae continues to fight for the rights of patients everywhere
to access this drug that she considers an essential medicine. She
is a founding director of Patients Out of Time, a national
organization that seeks to raise awareness of the therapeutic
effects of smoked cannabis, and has been instrumental in changing
the medical marijuana laws in her home state of Michigan. Her
tireless efforts to legalize marijuana for medical purposes, and her
reputation for creatively inventing recipes involving the drug, have
earned her the affectionate nickname “Grandma Marijuana.” |
